Christian Miller, Hans Holbein the Younger: The Years in Basel, 1515-1532. 528 pages, hardback, fully illustrated in colour and black and white. £45.00.
This book contains nearly the entire creative output of Hans Holbein the Younger’s Basel period, that is, the years between 1515 and 1532 when the artist produced a number of innovative designs for stained-glass windows, including armorial panels. Published to coincide with a 2006 exhibition of 40 paintings, 100 drawings and numerous prints at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the book complements the excellent Painting on Light catalogue of drawings and stained glass in the Age of Dürer and Holbein written by Barbara Butts and Lee Hendrix in 2000.
Contributions include essays by a number of distinguished scholars covering Holbein’s artistic development, his graphic works, his religious panel paintings, and individual works and work complexes such as the woodcut series of the Images of Death. Holbein’s artistic career, his patrons and his relationship to antique and contemporary art theory are also discussed. New and used copies are available from on-line bookstores.
