The Image of St. Francis: Responses to Sainthood in the Thirteenth Century, by Rosalind Brooke. This book discusses the stained-glass windows in the Upper Basilica at Assisi, as part of a wider study of how St Francis presented himself to contemporary audiences as a preacher and aesthetic, and how he was portrayed in images and texts after his death in 1226.
It includes 8 colour plates and 76 black and white images, some of which reproduce the earliest representations of the saint. The CVMA (GB) Picture Archive has an image from the church of St Peter Mancroft, Norwich, of St Francis receiving the stigmata.
